ChatGPT Ads in India: A Practical Guide for Lead Generation and Ecommerce
By Team Social Bird
If you run a business in India, you have probably noticed that your customers now ask ChatGPT the things they used to ask Google. Which CRM should I buy? Is this sunscreen okay for oily skin? Do I need GST registration for my small business?
Since September 2026, brands can show up in some of these conversations. OpenAI has opened its self-serve Ads Manager in India, so any business can now run ads on ChatGPT on its own.
Our clients at Social Bird have been asking us a lot about this. So we put together a simple guide on how ChatGPT Ads work, how to set them up, and how to test them without burning money.
One thing before we start: ChatGPT Ads is not Google Ads with a new logo. If you copy your Google or Meta campaign as it is, it most likely won't work the way you expect.

What are ChatGPT Ads?
ChatGPT Ads are sponsored placements that show up below a ChatGPT answer. They are clearly marked as sponsored and kept separate from the answer itself. An ad can carry your brand name, logo, headline, a short description, an image and a link to your landing page.
In India, these ads are shown to logged-in adult users on the Free and Go plans. People who pay for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Education plans don't see ads.
Important for advertisers
OpenAI has also made two promises that matter for both users and brands. Ads don't change what ChatGPT says in its answer, and advertisers never get to see anyone's chats. You only get campaign-level numbers.
So how does ChatGPT decide which ad to show? As per OpenAI, it looks at the context and intent of the conversation, your landing page, your headline and copy, the context hints you add and your targeting settings. If a user has personalised ads switched on, some signals from their wider ChatGPT use can also count.
When did ChatGPT Ads launch in India?
Ads started appearing for Indian users in the last week of August 2026. Self-serve Ads Manager opened for Indian advertisers on 4 September 2026. You can sign up at ads.openai.com, billing happens in rupees, and the minimum daily budget is ₹725.

Test First
Start small before moving serious budget
₹725 a day is low enough for most businesses to run a small, controlled test. But a low entry price is not a reason to move serious budget into it. Like any new channel, ChatGPT Ads has to prove three things first:
- It can reach the right people.
- Those people take useful actions, like enquiries, sign-ups or purchases.
- The cost of getting a customer makes sense for your business.
A quick note on budget: your daily budget works more like an average than a hard limit, so on some days the spend can go above the number you set. Read the helper text under the budget field before you go live.
How are ChatGPT Ads different from Google and Meta?
Think about how people actually use each platform. On Google, someone types a short search. On Instagram or Facebook, someone is scrolling and your ad catches them in between. On ChatGPT, someone is having a conversation, usually because they are trying to figure something out.
| Platform | What the user is doing | What the ad system mainly uses |
|---|---|---|
| Searching for something | Search query and intent | |
| Meta | Scrolling a feed | Audience, behaviour and creative |
| ChatGPT | Talking through a question or decision | Conversation context and intent |
The difference becomes clearer with a real example
On Google, someone types:
On ChatGPT, the same person might write:
The second message tells you the team size, the current problem, a must-have feature and a budget concern. That is the real opportunity here. Your brand can show up when someone has explained their problem in detail, not just typed three words.
How to set up ChatGPT Ads in India
The Ads Manager is still new and the screens will keep changing. But the basic flow looks like this:
Create your Ads Manager account and finish the advertiser and billing details.
Create a campaign with one clear business goal.
Choose your location targeting.
Create separate ad groups for different products, services or customer needs.
Add context hints that describe when your product is genuinely useful.
Write a few different ad versions, each with a different message.
Add the right landing page for each offer.
Set up conversion tracking before you judge anything.
Go live and keep an eye on delivery, clicks, spend and conversions.
Social Bird Tip
Don't put every product or service into one big ad group. Keep each ad group focused on one need. Your data will be cleaner and you will actually know what is working.
Running ChatGPT Ads for lead generation
Lead generation is one area we are quite excited about. Most service buyers don't start with a company name. They start with a problem.
What does that look like?
- “I just started a business. Do I need GST registration?”
- “My Google Ads are getting clicks but almost no leads.”
- “I need a lawyer to check a commercial agreement.”
- “Which accounting software is good for a small business?”
- “Which course should I do to move into data analytics?”
None of these people are searching for you yet. They are trying to understand their problem. That is the moment ChatGPT Ads can put you in front of them.
Build ad groups around problems, not service names
| Business | Customer's problem | Ad group theme |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing agency | Paid ads bringing poor-quality leads | Lead quality and acquisition |
| Tax consultant | Founder confused about compliance | GST and business tax help |
| SaaS company | Team stuck doing manual work | Workflow automation software |
| Edtech or coaching | Person comparing career options | Career switch and upskilling |
Don't chase cheap leads
This is where most brands go wrong, on every platform. A lead at ₹400 is not automatically better than a lead at ₹800. If the ₹400 leads never pick up the phone and the ₹800 leads turn into paying customers, the costlier campaign is the better one.
Always track the full journey:
Running ChatGPT Ads for ecommerce
Ecommerce is the other big testing ground, especially for products people think about before buying. Look at how people actually shop on ChatGPT:
These are not product searches. These are decisions being made in real time.
Which ecommerce brands should test first?
Good Fit
Products people compare before buying, products with a clear use case, products that solve a specific problem, and products that need a bit of explaining.
Harder to Make Work
Impulse buys, very low-ticket products, products that look the same as everyone else's, products people rarely research, and stores with weak product pages or checkout.
Match the landing page to the conversation
If someone is asking about running shoes for beginners, don't send them to your homepage. Send them to the running shoes collection, a comparison page or a specific product page. Every click should feel like the obvious next step.
How to use context hints
Context hints are one of the most interesting parts of ChatGPT Ads. They help OpenAI's system understand the kind of conversations, topics and customer needs where your ad group makes sense.
But please don't treat them like keywords. They are not rules that say "show my ad when someone types this exact phrase." They describe situations, and the system then picks up the many ways real people talk about that situation.
A simple way to write context hints
Who is the customer + what problem do they have + what situation are they in + why does your product help?
Examples
Marketing Agency
Business owners unhappy with their current ad results who want a partner to improve lead quality and bring down acquisition costs.
Home Fitness Brand
People setting up a workout routine at home who want compact equipment instead of big machines.
Skincare D2C Brand
People with oily or acne-prone skin looking for a simple daily routine that suits Indian weather.
Keep your ad groups focused
If you sell three very different products, give them three separate ad groups.
Writing ad copy that works on ChatGPT
OpenAI's own guidance is to keep ads clear, specific and focused on benefits. It also suggests creating several different versions so the system has more chances to match your ad to the right conversation.
So skip lines like "Transform your future with innovation." Nobody knows what that means.
Good copy answers four simple questions
- What are you offering?
- Who is it for?
- What problem does it solve?
- What does the customer actually get out of it?
Test genuinely different angles
| Angle | Example |
|---|---|
| Problem | Getting clicks but no real leads? |
| Outcome | Turn your ad spend into paying customers. |
| Use Case | Built for D2C brands scaling paid ads. |
| Product | Compact home workout gear, no gym needed. |
Landing pages: where most campaigns quietly fail
Even a great ad can't save a weak landing page. On ChatGPT this matters even more, because the user has often described a very specific need. If your ad promises one thing and the page makes them hunt around for it, they will leave.
| If the user is... | Send them to... |
|---|---|
| Researching a service | A focused service page |
| Comparing products | A category or comparison page |
| Ready to buy | The exact product page |
| Looking for a consultation | A simple booking or enquiry page |
The more specific the intent, the more specific the page should be.
Tracking and measurement
Treat ChatGPT Ads like any other performance channel. Clicks are not the result. Business outcomes are.
Ads Manager currently shows impressions, clicks, CTR, average CPC, average CPM and conversions once you set up conversion tracking. For tracking, you can use the OpenAI Pixel, the Conversions API, or both. You can also add UTM parameters to your landing page links so ChatGPT traffic shows up properly in GA4 or whatever analytics tool you use.
Important measurement note
Conversions may take some time to show up in Ads Manager, so don't panic on day one. There are also no public CPM or CPC benchmarks for India yet, so your own test data is the only benchmark that counts right now.
What we would track
For ecommerce, go deeper than the number of orders. If you spend ₹20,000 and get 20 orders, that alone tells you very little. You need to know the revenue, average order value, margin, and whether that acquisition cost actually works for your business. Same logic for lead generation: cheap leads are not the goal, profitable customers are.
ChatGPT Ads vs Google Ads vs Meta Ads
| Google Ads | Meta Ads | ChatGPT Ads | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where ads show | Search results | Social feed | Below conversation answers |
| Main signal | Search query and intent | Audience, behaviour, creative | Conversation context and intent |
| Best at | Capturing existing demand | Creating new demand | Research and comparison stage |
| Context hints | No | No | Yes |
| Maturity | Very established | Very established | New and still evolving |
ChatGPT Ads won't replace Google or Meta, at least not anytime soon. They do different jobs. Google works best when people already know what they want. Meta works best at creating demand through creative and audiences. ChatGPT sits in between, where people are still trying to understand, compare and decide.
For most brands, the smart move is to test ChatGPT as an extra channel and compare its numbers against what is already working.
Who should try ChatGPT Ads first?
Worth testing now
High-consideration products, SaaS and software, professional services, education and coaching, research-heavy ecommerce, and products with a clear use case.
Better to wait or prepare first
Very cheap impulse products, products with no clear difference from competitors, businesses with weak landing pages, businesses with no conversion tracking, and offers that rarely come up in conversations.
Important for regulated categories
If you are in finance, insurance or health, check whether your category is allowed and what review it needs before you plan any budget. These categories usually have stricter rules.
None of this is a guarantee that one category will win over another. The platform is still evolving, and results will depend on your offer, creative, landing page, campaign setup and conversion volume.
FAQs on ChatGPT Ads in India
Are ChatGPT Ads available in India?
Yes. Ads started showing to Indian users in late August 2026, and self-serve Ads Manager opened for Indian advertisers on 4 September 2026.
What is the minimum budget for ChatGPT Ads in India?
The minimum daily budget is ₹725. OpenAI can change this as the platform grows, so check inside Ads Manager before you plan.
Who sees ChatGPT Ads in India?
Logged-in adult users on the Free and Go plans. Users on paid plans like Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education don't see ads.
How are ChatGPT Ads targeted?
Through the context and intent of the conversation, your ad copy and landing page, the context hints you add, and your location targeting. Personalisation signals can also be used for users who have personalised ads switched on.
Can advertisers control or influence ChatGPT's answers?
No. OpenAI says ads are kept separate from answers and don't change what ChatGPT says. Advertisers also don't get access to user chats.
Can I run ChatGPT Ads for lead generation?
Yes. Services that people research before buying, like agencies, consultants, software and education, are a good place to start.
Can ecommerce brands run ChatGPT Ads?
Yes, especially brands selling products people compare and research before buying. Pure impulse products may find it harder.
Can ChatGPT Ads replace Google or Meta Ads?
Not right now. Treat it as an extra channel to test, and judge it against your existing campaigns on actual cost per customer.

How we would test ChatGPT Ads at Social Bird
If a client asked us to start ChatGPT Ads today, our first question would not be "how much Meta budget should we shift?" It would be these:
Our four-stage testing framework
Stage 1: Relevance
Start with a few focused ad groups and clearly different messages. See whether the platform finds the right conversations for the product.
Stage 2: Traffic Quality
Look past CTR. Check how people behave on the landing page, the quality of leads and what they do next.
Stage 3: Cost of Acquisition
Compare the cost of a qualified lead or customer with your current Google and Meta numbers.
Stage 4: Scale What Works
Once you find a combination of customer need, context hint, ad message, landing page and conversion that works again and again, increase spend slowly.
Our honest view
ChatGPT Ads should not get budget just because they are new. They should get budget once the numbers show they can bring in the right customers at a cost that makes sense.
